Jenny Woolworth’s Women in Punk Blog

I picked up this compilation Kopf: Hören! a few years back from a merch table laid out at concert in a squated house (Kalki in Zürich), where the beers where cheap (Sprint for 2CHF), the music loud (thanks Archie), the bands passionate and the audience loving and enthusiastic (all fifty of us).

Kopf: Hören! was released in 2002 on a German record label in Hamburg called frequenzpark. Here’s the story behind it from Isa, one of the women behind the project… “The idea of this compilation originated from an event called Sherrocko in Hamburg, a concert with different female bands and djanes. The whole night was really nonprofessional, yet interesting and inspiring. An idea was formed to create a compilation with all-female or nearly female bands. Isa looked for some bands for the sampler and after about one year Kendra and Joy became part of  the production.  Further contributions came from Armin of X-Mist who supported us with lp-covers and Martin from ENIAC who helped us with the design of the cover. The final result included ten bands which are nearly or completely all female.”

I haven’t seen it around anywhere before or since so I think it’s fallen the way of obscurity. It is a decent, honest and hard working little compilation worth a good listen. Makes me wonder how many other great lost local samplers of women’s punk are out there just waiting to be rediscovered…
