Welcome to the inaugural entry of The Jenny Woolworth Women in Punk Blog. These postings are an extension of my radio show, Tiger Beat, which I produced and broadcast live on Radio LoRa in Zurich, Switzerland from 2000 to 2007. Tiger Beat has been on hiatus since I moved to London a few months ago - prompting me to find a new creative outlet for my interest in women in music. This blog will feature new and emerging female musicians as well as highlight forgotten women of early punk and independent music.
For each entry I will feature a short bio of the band/musician/dj, along with an accompanying image and sound bite. If all goes well, I will even talk with the artists themselves. To avoid having to dream up witty questions for each featurette I have pre-select three questions to ask in each interview. So to kick this thing off proper it’s only fair that I answer the questions myself first…
JW: What is one of your favorite sounds and what does it mean to you?
JW: Interesting question, Jenny. Well, in relation to music, one of my favorite sounds is definitely that satisfying “pop” when the needle finds the groove, just before the music starts. In the everyday world, one of my most beloved sounds is the church bells in Switzerland. I never realized how much I missed the regular quarter-hour reminders until I lived in a city without them.
JW: Tell me about one of your most cherished records and why it is so important to you.
JW: Top on the list is the Heavens to Betsy / Bratmobile 7″ on K Records that I mail ordered from Olympia, Washington in the early 90s. It meant I was a riot grrl, even if I was stuck in the Pittsburgh suburbs.
JW: What is the stupidest comment/joke you have heard about women in the music business?
JW: “If it smells like fish, it’s a dish, if it smells like cologne, leave it alone”
There ya go! From now on, check back every Monday for updates, with the first entry to appear on 28 April 2008.
And hey, please take a minute and drop me a note to tell me how I’m doing. This whole project is a labour of love, so I really appreciate your kind words and feedback. By the way, thanks to Sandra Le for that London street picture up there!

Hello Big Sister :oP
I really do like the new picture on the top page and the one above. I’ll keep on my eyes on this blog - I added this page on my “favourite”. Stop having conversations with other people in you!! Otherwise you will end up like Schumann.
Tata xx

I just discovered this blog through the Dischord records website, and it’s one of the best blogs I’ve ever run across. I am so excited to download everything, and love that your content so unique. Thanks for supporting women artists! And that Bratmobile/Heavens to Betsy record is as iconic and important of a 90’s landmark as Nirvana’s Nevermind, in my opinion.
