Look Blue Go Purple found their beginnings in 1983 in a Dunedin, New Zealand practice room under a motorcycle shop. Featured players included Kathy Bull on bass, Norma O'Malley on keyboards and flute, Lesley Paris on drums, Denise Roughan on guitar and Kath Webster on guitar.
LBGP were part of the second wave of Dunedin bands taking clues from mentors like The Clean and the Chills, as well as contemporaries like the Double Happys, Verlaines and Sneaky Feelings. They added layered vocal harmonies, keyboards and even a touch of flute over the trademark Dunedin guitar strum and backbeat to create a distinctive sound of their own.
Before the band called it quits at the end of 1987, they recorded three EPs for the New Zealand based Flying Nun Records. Their debut EP, Bewitched, was released in the middle of 1985 to widespread acclaim. Their second EP, LBGPEP2 was released eighteen months later and landed a place on the New Zealand's Top 20. Their final release was the posthumous This Is This EP in 1988. In 1991 Flying Nun compiled all the bands EP on one CD with the apt title, Compilation.
