The Bloods was an all-female, post no-wave punk/funk band from New York City, featuring Adele Bertei on vocals, Annie Toone on keyboards and backing vocals, Kathy Rey on guitar, Brenda Alderman on bass and Kathleen Campbell on drums.
The band was active between 1979 - 1982 and released one single "Button-Up" recorded in England in 1981 for the Au Pairs's Exit Records. The 7" became an indie dance hit, garnering rave reviews in the New York and British press, including single of the week in NME, as well as extensive club and air-play internationally. However, the band had already split before its release, in the spring of 1982, shortly after a grueling and extensive European tour.
The band was invited to perform at the The Venus Weltklang festival - the first international women's rock festival - in West Berlin in June 1981, their live performance of "Blue Chevrolet" is featured on the festival compilation put out by Flame Records. Together with Red Crayola, they provided the soundtrack for Lizzie Borden's 1983 anarcho-feminist sci-fi revolutionary fable Born In Flames. Adele starred in the film alongside fellow ex-Contortions bandmate and Bush Tetras' guitarist Pat Place.
The Blood played numerous shows during their short career, sharing bills with the likes of REM, Gang of Four, Johnny Thunders, Allen Ginsberg, Nona Hendryx, DNA, Bush Tetras, ESG, The Go-Gos, The Fall, Y-Pants, the dBs, Delta 5, Adam Ant, Konk, Afrika Bambaata, Liquid Liquid, Sugarhill Gang, Pigbag, The Treacherous Three, ? & The Mysterians and many more.
Recently the song "Button-Up" appeared on the New York Noise compilation released in June 2003 on the British Soul Jazz Records.
